If a matrix membrane switch reports an extra, unpressed key during a multi-key operation, check the row-column mapping and scanning method, then inspect for unintended connections against the schematic. A ghost key that appears with a particular combination does not establish a short-circuit fault. Correct single-key continuity also does not prove that combinations can be identified uniquely. This article covers ordinary, non-safety-related equipment inputs, not emergency stops or safety interlocks.
The NEPCON ASIA organizer's exhibitor preview lists surface mounting, dispensing and coating, soldering, testing and measurement, and automation. The exhibition is scheduled for 27 to 29 October 2026 at Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center in Bao'an. This is advance information; it does not confirm that the event has opened or establish the internal keypad design or supplier of any exhibited machine.
Engineers evaluating test equipment, workstations or control interfaces can bring a specific question: if their own panel requires simultaneous key presses, does a single-key demonstration cover the required combinations? Mapping the actual extra key back to the row-column diagram gives the supplier more useful information than a general report that the keys interfere with one another.
Use electrical coordinates, not distances on the panel
Rows and columns define the electrical relationships in a matrix. Keys far apart on the panel may share a row or column. First map each key name to its row, column and connector pins. Use the current circuit drawing; do not infer coordinates from the printed layout.
Section 9.1.1 of the TI TCA8418 datasheet gives a specific scanning example. Holding keys 1, 2 and 11 creates a path through the closed switches that also registers the unpressed key 12. The three pressed positions occupy three corners of a rectangle in the matrix. This explains the illustrated wiring and scanning conditions, not every three-key combination or controller.
The theory section of Microchip AN3407 also shows ambiguity when scanning a whole axis. Record whether the system scans individual lines or reads each whole axis in turn. Saying only that it uses matrix scanning does not define which combinations it can distinguish.
Compare two types of evidence using the same actions
The table organizes diagnostic records; it is not a universal acceptance standard. Preserve reproduction records from the original sample and program before deciding whether to change the circuit or firmware. Each observation narrows the investigation but cannot assign responsibility on its own.
Before resistance or continuity checks, suitably qualified personnel must follow the equipment's power-off procedure, confirm that no external voltage is present, and isolate the mainboard and other branches that could create parallel paths. For a panel containing components, confirm that the method is suitable first. Do not switch to continuity mode on a powered scanning circuit. Use the project documents and instrument instructions for pin pairs, thresholds and test conditions.
| State to check | What to record | What it may indicate | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press each key separately, then release all keys | Actual keys, raw row-column states and reported key codes | Whether mapping or single-key input is already abnormal | That every combination can be identified correctly |
| Build the abnormal combination in the specified order, then release keys one at a time | Actual keys at each step, the extra key's position, raw states and report changes | Whether the extra key appears or disappears with a particular combination path | That a matching pattern rules out a circuit defect |
| With power off and external branches isolated against the drawing, release all keys | Pin pairs that should be isolated, measurement mode, readings and sample state | Whether an unintended connection needs further localization | That a continuity beep alone locates a fault inside the panel |
| Keep the matrix definition unchanged and compare before and after decoding | Raw row-column records, the decoded key set and final application actions | Whether ambiguity arises during scanning, decoding or subsequent logic | That no application action means the raw input was normal |
For example, suppose an ordinary settings panel works with each key individually but reports the opposite corner of a rectangle when a specified combination is held. Releasing one of those keys removes the extra report. This supports checking the scanning path first, but does not replace an isolated circuit check. If an unintended connection remains between pins that should be open after all keys are released and power and external branches are isolated, retain the readings and inspect the panel, tail, connector or fixture. Ghosting cannot explain every issue. This is a hypothetical diagnostic situation, not a Baoshengda customer case or test result.
Define the combinations to retain before changing the design
Possible measures include reviewing row-column assignments, suitable isolation structures or firmware handling of ambiguous states. First define permitted and prohibited combinations and whether an abnormal state should be reported or ignored. Firmware suppression may also prevent a legitimate combination from being reported, so check each required combination on the prototype. Increasing debounce time is not a universal remedy for matrix-path ambiguity.
Record the changed items and keep drawings, programs and verification records on matching revisions. After a change, retest the original abnormal combination, required valid combinations, and press-release sequences. Agree on criteria and coverage for the project; do not promise arbitrary simultaneous-key counts.
Include the supply boundary in the issue report
Shenzhen Baoshengda Technology Co., Ltd.'s membrane-switch customization information (Chinese source) includes key definitions, circuit or interface information, and mapping and continuity checks with matching enclosure and mainboard revisions in project discussions and sample confirmation. Supply the abnormal combination, key-to-row-column and pin mapping, mainboard scanning description, sample and firmware revisions, and any missing raw records. A product category alone does not establish that the project supports conflict-free multi-key input.
Distinguish what is being purchased. A graphic overlay or keypad overlay containing only surface markings and window coverage is not a complete membrane switch. If a metal-dome keypad overlay is supplied for use with the customer's PCB, separately confirm responsibility for circuits, scanning and firmware. Do not assign the complete system's recognition capability to the surface component.

For isolated electrical checks, compare the different objects of continuity, short-circuit and insulation checks (Chinese). Submit circuit drawings and reproduction records through the contact page before discussing the specific structure and verification scope.
