Before choosing EL or LED backlighting for a membrane switch, define the illuminated areas, the power available from the equipment, who supplies the driver, and the space for the driver and optical stack. Compare both options against the same assembly and acceptance requirements. An illuminated photograph cannot establish these conditions or show that either technology is always thinner, more efficient or longer lasting.
The patent's AC-excited backlight is not evidence of LED supply
CN217822500U, “一种机械式车载薄膜开关” (a mechanical vehicle-mounted membrane switch), published as a granted utility model on 15 November 2022 with Shenzhen Baoshengda Technology Co., Ltd. named as the patent holder, describes an arrangement in claim 1: the backlight lies between the overlay spacer and the circuit-to-overlay spacer. Connected phosphor regions correspond to the translucent key symbols. AC applied to two electrodes at a break creates the electric field that excites the phosphor. This article uses the published document only to explain that electroluminescent (EL) structure. Current legal status, available supply and project validation results require separate confirmation.
Dependent claims also describe domes corresponding to the key symbols, a PC overlay and embossed key areas. Figure 1 is an exploded stack drawing, not a record of the driver, assembly tests or brightness for a current order. The vehicle reference in the document's title is not evidence that a product has passed automotive qualification, equipment safety or electromagnetic compatibility validation.
Separate equipment power from light-source drive conditions
Microchip's EL driver information lists single-lamp, inductorless, dual-lamp and segmented driver types, with load capacitance, output drive and, for some products, frequency among the selection conditions. An EL backlight therefore still needs specific driver and load information. Equipment supply voltage must not be treated as the operating condition at the light-emitting layer. The selected component documentation and circuit design should establish the actual voltage, waveform and frequency.
TI's LP55231 product information provides a specific LED driver example with a charge pump, programmable outputs, current and PWM control, and an I²C-compatible interface. It illustrates driver, channel and control boundaries in an LED design. It is not a recommendation to use this part in the project or evidence that Baoshengda products use it. Neither manufacturer's example replaces the circuit and BOM for the order.
For an RFQ, list equipment power and control interfaces, driver input and output, and the light-source load and connections separately. If the equipment owner supplies the driver, provide its documentation. If the supplier must provide it, list the driver as a separate supply item. “With backlighting” does not establish that quotations include the same items.
Check both options against one input table
Place both options under the same equipment conditions, then identify the unresolved items in each column.
| Engineering input review suggestions based on the patent, Microchip and TI documents above. These are not universal specifications or acceptance limits; confirm the structure and tests for the project. | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Input to align | Clarify for EL | Clarify for LED | Keep with the sample review |
| Power and driver responsibility | Driver part, input supply, output waveform/voltage/frequency and permissible load documentation; identify selections still open | LED and driver/current-limiting design, polarity, connections and simultaneous channels; identify equipment-owner-supplied items | Circuit, BOM and interface revisions; do not present unresolved values as confirmed specifications |
| Illuminated zones and control | Illuminated-area drawing, whether connected regions share electrodes, and driver arrangements for independently controlled areas | Source locations, colors, channels and lighting combinations; define any light-guide or diffuser scope | The same zone drawing and control states; record symbols and dark areas separately |
| Assembly space and key actuation | Emitting layer, spacers, domes and lead exits; driver mounting space and routing boundaries | Components, joints, light-guide/masking layers and tail positions relative to key actuation and enclosure clamping | Complete cross-section, enclosure and support drawings; actual assembly rather than bare-part appearance |
| Optical viewing conditions | Combined samples of emitting layer, translucent ink, embossing and masked areas | Combined samples of LEDs, overlay, diffuser/light guide and masking | The same ambient light, distance, angle and agreed measurement points; state exposure settings for photographs |
| Delivery and validation scope | Emitting layer, keypad assembly or driver-inclusive assembly; who performs electrical and equipment validation | LED-equipped component, overlay or complete assembly; responsibility for the customer's PCB, software and assembly | Supply list, responsibilities, sample revisions, methods and unresolved items |
Similar appearance still requires a stack and actuation review
For projects needing embossing and tactile feedback, overlay the translucent symbols, dome positions, openings, light sources and supports on the same drawing revision. The patent description discusses masking outside the intended symbols and ink stretching or cracking after embossing. These can become sample inspection items; the document does not establish suitability for every overlay material, ink or forming condition. Replacing the backlight layer or adding a light guide also requires review of the actual effects on actuation and electrical closure.
For example, suppose two options share the same appearance drawing, but one quotation includes only the overlay and illuminating component while the other includes a driver board and connection leads. Separate the supply lists before comparing prices. This is a hypothetical review example, not a customer case. Power consumption or lifetime comparisons require evidence for each complete option under agreed lighting cycles, environments and evaluation methods. Without those records, keep the comparison pending validation rather than ranking either technology absolutely.
Supplier drawings should connect the driver to the zone layout
Baoshengda Technology's backlit membrane switch page covers project discussion inputs such as illuminated areas, ambient light, available thickness and supply conditions. The corresponding Chinese backlighting page (Chinese) and LED design review page (Chinese) include polarity, pins, current limiting, actuation clearance and viewing in the assembly. These are the current public project review boundaries of Shenzhen Baoshengda Technology Co., Ltd., not a promise of EL stock, a specified driver or passed performance tests. Overlay-only supply, a dome-equipped overlay used with the customer's PCB, and a complete switch assembly need separate delivery definitions.
For product scope, start with the membrane switch overview. Optical sample details are covered in LED backlight uniformity acceptance (Chinese) and backlight stray-light zone acceptance (Chinese). This article first establishes whether drivers, zones and delivery items match; it does not repeat those optical defect investigations.
When using the project contact page, provide the illuminated/masked zone drawing, enclosure cross-section, equipment power and control interfaces, driver responsibility and sample evaluation conditions together. List unresolved fields and agree who will supply them. “Lit” in an effect image does not mean the complete design has been confirmed.
